LIPOPROTEIN A

Lipoprotein(a), commonly abbreviated as Lp(a), is a type of lipoprotein present in the blood and composed of a protein molecule called apolipoprotein(a) bound to a particle similar to LDL (low-density lipoprotein). Elevated levels of Lp(a) are considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as it is thought to contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Lipoprotein(a) testing is performed using a blood sample. The sample is usually taken on an empty stomach, as Lp(a) levels can vary after meals. This test is used to assess cardiovascular risk and can be especially useful in people with a family history of premature cardiovascular disease. The result of the Lp(a) test provides additional information about the risk of heart disease and helps doctors assess an individual's overall cardiovascular risk, especially when other risk factors, such as elevated LDL cholesterol, are present.
